Gong meditation is an ancient and powerful method for inducing deep meditative states. The experience created by the sound of the gong leads to a total immersion in sound, until all other sensations and thoughts disappear. As the gong’s sound waves wash over the listener, the agitation of the mind fades, and the individual reaches what is known as the “zero point,” a state of stillness and tranquility.Everything around us originates from vibrations. Subconsciously, humans strive to return to their source, to their original vibration. Gongs carry this primordial vibration. All gongs resonate with the sound of 'Om' or 'Aum,' and this is their fundamental vibration.
Origins of the Gong
The gong's history dates back to the Bronze Age, around 4,000 years BCE. Sacred gongs were traditionally crafted from a blend of copper, zinc, and nickel—the latter believed to be a divine element, sometimes referred to as the “mysterious drop from heaven.”
More than 40 centuries ago, Buddha sent his followers across the world with the instruction to inscribe the phrase “TAY LOY” on each bell, which in Mandarin translates to “The bad is over, the good has come!” This symbolized the return of joy and spirituality to the Earth.
Around the same time, Pythagoras in Greece began studying the effects of musical frequencies on human health, writing about the natural harmonies between tones. When playing a gong, these natural harmonies arise spontaneously, creating unique and distinct vibrations each time. This connects the listener to the primordial vibration.
Healing Effects of the Gong
Gongs, made from this special metal alloy, vibrate at frequencies that are physically felt by the body. While some therapies, such as crystal healing, may not be perceived by everyone, the sound vibrations from a gong are unmistakable. The vibrations travel through the air and penetrate the human body, transforming it into a receptive organ that absorbs the sound.
The primordial sound of the gong can have varied effects—it may be calming and soothing for some, while it helps others enter deep meditative states. Additionally, the sound is known for its cleansing and healing properties.
"Some people experience pain in problem areas during a gong session," shares practitioner Ani. Emotional cleansing or the release of subconscious thoughts and patterns often occurs during these sessions. This phenomenon can be explained by Masaru Emoto's theory of water.
Water, which makes up 60% to 70% of the human body, has the ability to retain memory and restructure itself. The gong’s vibrations restructure the cellular makeup of the body into a perfect, divine, and harmonious form. However, for this transformation to occur, the body must first release anything that obstructs this process, which is part of the cleansing experience.
Recommendations
It is recommended to drink plenty of water before and after a gong session, as the body releases many toxins during the process. The effects of the gong are immediate and intense—while some people may not feel the subtler energies of Reiki, crystals, or other forms of vibrational healing, no one is immune to the powerful impact of the gong.
Similar principles apply to other forms of sound therapy, such as Tibetan singing bowls and chimes, but the energy of the gong is unique due to its size and the specific vibrations it produces.
Types of Gongs
“We work with planetary gongs,” Ani explains, “which are tuned to the vibration of each planet.”
Each planet follows a specific orbit and emits sounds at distinct frequencies, known as the “music of the planets.” For instance, the Sun's fundamental tone is 126.22 Hz, while the Moon's vibration ranges from 140 Hz to 240 Hz across different octaves. Master gong makers strive to recreate these planetary frequencies.
As inhabitants of the solar system, we are all connected to the planets, and astrologers explain how planetary movements affect us. Similarly, planetary gongs influence both our bodies and minds. The Sun, for example, is associated with the solar plexus chakra and affects the bladder, adrenal glands, stomach, small intestine, and liver.
Each planet carries distinct qualities. The Sun enhances willpower, vitality, and resilience, while each planetary gong is tied to specific attributes and organs. At the same time, each gong is universal in its effect.
Playing the Gong
The gong is often considered the instrument of the New Age. Musicians who play gongs undergo specialized training in the techniques and methods required for their unique sound. During performances, the musician enters a state of dynamic meditation, playing intuitively without conscious thought.
Gong meditation offers a profound journey into sound, allowing the listener to access deep states of peace, healing, and connection to the universe.
